Art Curriculum Overview
I was trained to focus my lessons on the Elements and Principles of Design, Art History, Critique, and Medium Techniques.
The Elements and Principles of Design are the building blocks to create artwork. You will find most of them in any work of art, good or bad.
Even before working at this school I found it very important to make connections between other disciplines (history, science, math, technology) and art. With our steam initiative my goal is to collaborate with the academic teachers to create lessons that connect to material that the students are already learning. An example of We can focus on an artist that lived during a time period that they are learning in their history class.
Critique is a format that allows students to break down their thought processes using critical thinking questions on a specific work of art. There are four sections Description, Analysis, Interpretation, and Judgement. The younger classes work primarily on Description where they do a lot of close looking as a class at various art pieces. 7th and 8th graders will be introduced to Analysis, Interpretation, and Judgement.
